Barnsley born striker Geoff Horsfield has had to end his career after being diagnosed with testicular cancer last Friday.

The 34 year old was hoping to sign a deal with League One Walsall but this awful news has put an end to those hopes and also to his career.

Horsfield who was born in Barnsley but never actually played for the club despite being linked several times enjoyed a good career- some of it spent in the Premier League. He played for a total of nine clubs- Halifax, Fulham, Birmingham, Wigan, West Brom, Sheffield United, Leeds United, Leicester City and finished up at Scunthorpe United. In total Horsfield made a total of 369 career appearances and scored 123 goals.

Geoff Horsfield last night revealed his career has been ended by cancer.

The former Sheffield United striker, 34, was diagnosed with testicular cancer last Friday and will have surgery next week.

He was hoping to sign a contract with League One side Walsall.

However he said: " My surgeon has told me it's the end of my professional career, which is disappointing. But the hardest part was telling my wife and three kids."
