Head to Head

Every Barnsley and Cardiff fan will be looking for good omens this weekend so Ill try my best for The Reds.

Well first of all this is the furthest either side has been in the competition since the respective years they went on to win the FA Cup, (Barnsley in 1912 and Cardiff in 1927- the first and only year the cup was won by a non-English team.) Both sides have only won the cup once and this will be their third meeting in the competition.

The first meeting back in 1957 saw The Reds win 1-0 at Ninian Park but Cardiff got revenge exactly ten years later when after a 1-1 draw at Oakwell, Cardiff triumphed 2-1 in the replay. Barnsley are looking for their first victory over Cardiff since 2002 when goals from Chris Morgan (2) and Rory Fallon saw The Reds scrape a 3-2 success.

Barnsley finished 19th in the Second Division that year- their lowest position in the last 28 years. Cardiff finished 6th and were promoted via the play-offs after beating QPR 1-0 in the final.

Since then Cardiff have won two with two draws.

The most recent meeting was at Oakwell in the Championship on the 29th September 2007. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink put Cardiff ahead after 73 minutes but a late Brian Howard header earned The Red s a share of the spoils.

Cup Facts

Both Barnsley and Cardiff have won the FA Cup once- Barnsley 1912 and Cardiff 1927. This is the furthest either side has been in the competition since their wins.

This year was the first year Barnsley had progressed beyond the Third Round since 1999. Cardiff's Quarter-Final win over Middlesbrough was the first time they had reached that stage since their success in 1927.

This Season

Despite strong hopes for a promotion push, Cardiff find themselves in 12th place in the Championship, five points off the play-off places. They are undefeated however, in their last seven games in all competitions and drew 0-0 with West Brom on Tuesday night. Their cup run started with a 3-1 win at Chasetown followed by Hereford (2-1), Wolves (2-0) and Middlesbrough (2-0)

Barnsley meanwhile are entrenched in a relegation battle and by close of play on Saturday could be in the relegation zone. Just 1 away win in the league has contributed to the spectacular downfall from 8th place in December so the cup giant-killings have become a welcome distraction. The Reds have won just three of their last 10 matches, and two of those were Liverpool and Chelsea! The cup run started with a 2-1 win over Blackpool followed by Southend (1-0) Liverpool (2-1) and Chelsea (1-0)
