Football League refuse to lift transfer embargo

Football League spokesman John Nagle last night reiterated that Barnsley will be unable to engage in any transfer activity while the club remains in administration. According to League policy, clubs in this situation are only allowed to sign players in 'extenuating circumstances'.

"They can make an appeal to the League if they want to try and get the ban lifted and it has been known to work – Notts County were successful last season – but they must prove to us that they cannot field a competitive side due to injuries," Nagle said.

Barnsley's injury problems have been well documented - 11 players were out of action when the Reds took on Port Vale last Saturday - but Nagle stressed "If they have got senior players who are capable of playing then it is unlikely that they will get special dispensation."

The news will come as a big blow to Tykes boss Glyn Hodges, who recently revealed that he has been in talks with three ex-Premiership players.
