Barnsley's disappointing pre season got even worse after Premier League Wigan came to Oakwell and left with a 6-0 win.

Goals from Marlon King, Emile Heskey, Antonio Valencia, two from Daniel de Ridder and Michael Brown gave Wigan the win but several stunning stops from Reds keeper Kyle Letheren kept it down to a respectable half-dozen.

Letheren had a dodgy first half but recovered in the second half to make three great saves and a brilliant penalty save to deny De Ridder getting his hat-trick.

This surely indicates to Simon Davey that 3-5-2 does not work. Especially with mis-firing strikers.

Meanwhile, rumours that Celtic striker Derek Riordan is signing for the Reds for £800,000 have been quashed. This means the Reds are still on the lookout for a striker who is actually going to score goals.
