Brazilian full-back Dominik Werling is set to move to Championship rivals Ipswich Town after he and his agent turned down a contract at Oakwell.
As revealed on TYKESMAD last week, Werling is all set to leave the club once his loan deal from Turkish side Sakaryaspor runs out tomorrow.
When the story first broke there was no news from the club but details have emerged over the last couple of days as Werling's absence from the squad has raised suspicions.
Werling has not featured in Simon Davey's 16 since the 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace on the 8th December where he picked up his fifth booking of the season.
A statement on Barnsley's Official Website says today:
DOMINIK Werling's future at Oakwell is no clearer this morning and Barnsley Football Club are still unsure as to whether the German will be with the squad next month.
Dominik arrived at Oakwell last summer for a six month loan period with an agreement in place with his parent club - Sakaryspor - and his agent to sign him on a permanent 18-month contract from January 2008, subject to certain criteria being met.
In the light of Dominik's performances for the Reds this season Barnsley Football Club have made him and his agent a very generous offer.
Dominik's agent has rejected these new, vastly improved terms, and reneged on the agreement in place.
Ipswich Town have now emerged as favourites to take his signature but Town boss Jim Magilton told the East Anglican Daily Times:
"We have not made a move for Werling. His agent contacted us and enquired if we would be interested but that's all."
It is though now likely the man dubbed the "new Roberto Carlos" has played his last game for Barnsley.
Talking of defensive headaches The Reds have another one for tomorrow's trip to Glanford Park to take on struggling Scunthorpe United in the first game of 2008.
Centre-back Dennis Souza will miss his first game of the season after picking up a knee injury in the draw with Southampton.
Reds boss Simon Davey told www.barnsleyfc.co.uk:
"Dennis injured his knee ligaments at the weekend. We don't know just how bad it is but he will miss tomorrow's game.
Stephen Foster returns though from suspension but Lewin Nyatanga plays his last game before returning to Derby County.
