As exclusively revealed by TykesMad, The Reds have agreed a pre-contract agreement with former Real Madrid midfielder Diego Leon for the Spaniard to join at the start of the January transfer window.

He has been strongly linked with a move to Oakwell for a week or so now and it has been in the gossip columns in newspapers but www.barnsleyfc.co.uk, SkySports and TeamTalk have both confirmed that Leon has signed the pre-contract agreement.

Barnsley have reached a pre-contract agreement to sign Spanish midfielder Diego Leon from Swiss side Grasshopper Zurich

The 24-year-old former Real Madrid youth player, joined German side Arminia Bielefeld in 2004 and moved to the Swiss Super League side at the beginning of the 2006/2007 season.

He will now move to Oakwell at the start of the January transfer window when his contract with the Tykes officially begins.

A statement on the Swiss club's official website said: "Diego Leon, who moved to Grasshopper Zurich at the start of the 2006/07 season, has joined Barnsley FC in the second highest league in the UK, the Championship."

"Leon's contract, which ran until June 2009, has been terminated after mutual agreement between the club and player.

"Leon will move immediately to the English club."

BARNSLEY manager Simon Davey has today confirmed that the Club have reached a pre-contract agreement with midfielder Diego Leon.

Diego will join the Reds on January 1, 2008, subject to the relevant paperwork being registered with the Football Authorities and clearance received.

The 23-year-old playmaker from Palencia has spent the last two years with Grasshoppers Zurich after impressing with German side Arminia Bielefeld.

A talented midfielder, Diego started his career amongst the superstars at Real Madrid. Diego came up through the youth ranks at Real Madrid and was handed a squad number for the 2005/2006 campaign. He left the Santiago Bernabeu in 2005 to join Arminia Bielefeld initially on loan.

Simon commented: "I am delighted to have reached an agreement with Diego and bring another quality attacking player into our squad".
