The 27 year-old has not featured in Barnsley's first-team this season due to injury and was placed on the transfer list by manager Gudjon Thorarson.
Dale manager Alan Buckley said "Gary Jones is a player who is held in high regard by this football club. He made an excellent impact during his previous spell as a player at Rochdale, and everybody concerned with the club will hope he can do the same again.
"If further down the line we have the possibility of taking things further then we'll discuss it as and when," he added.
