Lewin Nyatanga has today joined League One side Northampton Town on a season long loan deal.

The 27 year old had a fantastic first loan spell at Oakwell from Derby County between 2007 and 2008 but has failed to hit the same heights since returning on a permanent basis from Bristol City in the summer of 2013.

The 34 times capped Welsh international was brought back to the club by David Flitcroft on a free transfer but the Reds were relegated at the end of his first season back in South Yorkshire in which he made only 12 appearances.

“Tangs” was much more of a regular in Barnsley’s first season back in League One, scoring five times in 51 appearances as The Reds finished 11th.

He was first choice last season up until the 19th December but his last game, was the 2-0 defeat by Wigan which saw the Reds lie in 21st position in the table. Marc Roberts was brought back into the side there after and was never displaced as the club went on a magnificent run, culminating in winning promotion via the play-offs.

Paul Heckingbottom has also this summer moved to bring in Angus MacDonald from Torquay- who was subsequently given Nyatanga’s No.5 jersey and now Nyatanga will drop back down to League One to join the newly promoted Cobblers.

Ironically Northampton are at Oakwell tomorrow night for the first round of the EFL Cup but Nyatanga is not eligible to play.
