Barnsley could be set to pull off another major coup in the transfer market after opening talks with Leroy Lita.

The 29 year old is a free agent following his release by Swansea this summer and was deep in talks with manager Danny Wilson and chief executive Ben Mansford last night after the club completed the signing of midfielder Keith Treacy.

Wilson indicated to supporters at last week’s Question & Answer session that he was lining up a “wow” signing for League One, and Lita could be that man.

The former Chelsea trainee has scored 93 goals in 205 games for nine clubs with his most prolific spells coming at Bristol City and Middlesbrough.

He scored 31 goals in 44 starts at Ashton Gate, including 29 in the 2004-2005 League One campaign –one of those came at Oakwell in the August- which earned him a £1m move to Reading that summer.

Lita scored 20 league goals in 60 starts with the Berkshire outfit and hit seven in seven for them in the FA Cup, whilst also spending time out on loan at Charlton and Norwich.

The Congo born striker moved to Middlesbrough in 2009 and scored 20 goals in 51 games earning a £1.75m to Swansea two years later.

Whilst at the Liberty Stadium, Lita came down to South Yorkshire to join Sheffield Wednesday on loan and bagged six goals in 13 starts.

BBC Radio Sheffield’s Andy Giddings tweeted this morning:

“Understand #barnsleyfc are trying to sign striker Leroy Lita. Deal not done yet. It follows the arrival of Keith Treacy last night.”
