Barnsley have today lost their number 1 and longest serving player after goalkeeper Luke Steele confirmed his departure from Oakwell with a move to Panathinaikos sealed.

29-year-old Steele was one of the players rumoured to be leaving the club after relegation from the Championship last season and now he has ended his six year association with the club, saying on Twitter:

"Barnsley fans your messages today have been amazing I appreciate them so much... I will be in touch later but yes I have left Barnsley."

He signed, initially on loan from West Brom in 2008, making his heroic debut in the unforgettable win over Liverpool at Anfield in the FA Cup. He signed permanently the following May and has made a total of 226 appearances for the Reds.

This leaves Danny Wilson with just one senior keeper in new signing Adam Davies so it looks as though the number 1 position is another one that will need strengethening before the Reds open up their League One campaign at home to Crawley Town.

The departure of Steele also marks the end of an era, as he was the last remaining player at the club who took part in the epic run to the FA Cup Semi-Finals in 2008, knocking out Liverpool and Chelsea along the way.
