Barnsley's South Yorkshire tussle with Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough has been postponed due to the icy condition around the ground.

The pitch was perfectly playable, but after consultations with South Yorkshire police, Wednesday have decided to cancel the game due to the icy conditions on the roads around Hillsborough and Sheffield.

No date has yet been set for the fixture. Ironically it means that both away games at the Sheffield clubs have had to be postponed with the Valentine's Day meeting with Sheffield United at Bramall Lane, forced into a re-arrangement due to United playing in the FA Cup that weekend.

On the bright side, it means that for the first time in 26 years, The Reds have not lost on the day they were supposed to be playing at Hillsborough!

Sheffield Wednesday have postponed tonight's fixture against Barnsley due to potentially treacherous conditions surrounding Hillsborough stadium.

While the pitch would have been playable tonight the club have decided after in-depth discussions with South Yorkshire Police to postpone the match due to public safety concerns.

Sheffield Wednesday chairman, Lee Strafford, said: "As a club we were confident of staging this game and we know that many people across South Yorkshire wanted to come to this match.

"However, the approach roads to Hillsborough and pathways surrounding the ground are very icy and with further sub zero temperatures forecast for the remainder of today the conditions certainly do not look likely to improve.

"Obviously we only want people to come and enjoy matches at our stadium but when we cannot guarantee peoples' safety coming to the game we have to act responsibly and make the right decision in postponing the fixture."

"We look forward to seeing our supporters out in force again on Saturday at Bramall Lane and for the beam back of the Steel City derby at Hillsborough."

Sheffield Wednesday will update fans on a rearranged fixture once a date is agreed with Barnsley.
