Barnsley have made their second foray into the transfer market with the acquisition of 21 year old defender Jason McCarthy from Premier League outfit Southampton.

McCarthy who is 6ft 1” can operate at both right back and central defence and has signed a three-year deal at Oakwell after the two clubs agreed a fee of around £200,000.

He made only one appearance for the South Coast outfit, making his Premier League debut as an 87th minute substitute in a 3-1 win at Crystal Palace on Boxing Day 2014 and has spent the last two seasons out on loan.

2015-2016 was spent in League Two with Wycombe Wanderers making 39 appearances and winning their supporters Player of the Year award.

His form in the fourth tier then saw him elevated to League One last season when he played for the team Barnsley defeated in the previous year’s play-off semi-finals Walsall, appearing 52 times – he played in every minute of their league campaign -  and also won their supporters Player of the Year award!
