Muller Injury Update

Last updated : 31 January 2008 By Rob Miles (barnsley Boy)

Devastated Reds goalkeeper Heinz Muller will today go for an arthroscopy to determine the full extent of the knee injury which is set to rule him out for the rest of the season.

An MRI scan has confirmed the giant German has torn his lateral meniscus bizarrely in the shape of a bucket handle but further tests and an operation are needed to see if there is further damage.

Reds physio Richard Kelly said the best case scenario for Muller was to be ruled out for six to eight weeks with the worst case scenario of nine to twelve months!!!

What ever the timescale Muller will definitely miss Saturday's trip to Coventry City and the dream FA Cup tie at Liverpool. He will also miss South Yorkshire derbies with Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United among others.

This injury, sustained after 16 minutes of Tuesday night's 1-0 win over Colchester has come at the worst possible time with less than 24 hours of the transfer window remaining. It means Simon Davey must now look to strengthen a position he probably had no desire to strengthen beforehand.

If no replacement can be found before midnight tonight it is likely 29 year old Kyle Letheran (with just 1 sub FA Cup appearance to his name) will be thrown into the next few games. Nick Colgan, transfer listed has very little chance of a recall but should at least be on the bench on Saturday as Davey will not risk not having a substitute goalkeeper again.

It has emerged Davey pleaded with Muller to return for the second half on Tuesday, a decision which may have worsening Muller's injury.

P.S I have started a Get Well Soon Muller thread on the messageboard which can be found here. Please leave any messages of support for Heinz over the next week and will print them off and give them to the club to pass on to Muller

Cheers BB
