No Magic Spell for Potter

22-year-old defender Luke Potter has very sadly been forced to retire after succumbing to a spate of knee injuries that have left him sidelined for the best part of two years.

Potter came through the ranks at Oakwell and made his debut under Simon Davey, in the final game of the 2006-2007 season- a 7-0 defeat at West Bromwich Albion.

The 6ft 4in centre back who could also operate at full back spent the 2007-2008 campaign out on loan at Stafford Rangers and then the 2008-2009 season at Kettering before getting the chance in the Reds first team under Mark Robins in 2009-2010 when he made 14 starts.

Potter only managed four appearances last season due to a succession of knee ligament injuries and despite trying to make a comeback this season, on loan at Alfreton Town he has finally been force to succumb to his injuries and has retired.

Potter told www.barnsleyfc.co.uk:

"I'm afraid this is what it's come to, It's not what I wanted to do. You have to make a decision at some time.

I'd like to thank all the physio staff here at Barnsley who have been magnificent. Sedge (Craig Sedgwick), Chris Burton and Kev Hornsby have all been brilliant."

Whilst general manager Don Rowing said:

"The Club has lost a good player but one has to feel for Luke whose promising career has been cut short by his injury. Luke signed as a scholar at the same time as I started at the Club and I've found him to be very committed and professional in everything he does."

Overall Luke Potter made 21 appearances for Barnsley, and 32 out on loan.

Everybody at TykesMad wishes Luke all the very best in his future endeavours.
