Npower Championship Matchday Fourteen: Barnsley v Hull City

Last updated : 30 October 2010 By Rob Miles (Barnsley Boy)

Team News:

Paul Hayes could be set for his second Barnsley debut after his shock loan move back to Oakwell last week. It depends on which formation manager Mark Robins opts for as to whether he starts or comes on from the bench. If Robins opts for a 4-4-2, he could partner Chris Wood but if he goes with the much maligned 4-4-1-1 system, Hayes may have to play second fiddle to Goran Lovre and Andy Gray. Full back Bobby Hassell is the only injury doubt which means Kieran Trippier is likely to continue at right back.

Likely Lineup:

Luke Steele

Matt Hill

Jason Shackell

Stephen Foster

Kieran Trippier

Adam Hammill

Nathan Doyle

Jacob Butterfield

Diego Arismendi

Goran Lovre/ Paul Hayes

Chris Wood

Head To Head:

Going on recent meetings between these two sides, the team that tomorrow’s tea time contest is likely to win the return fixture as well. In the last four seasons that Barnsley and Hull have met in league combat, one side has achieved a “double”- both sides doing it twice.

In the most recent meetings- 2007-2008, it was the Tigers who achieved a 3-0 win at the KC Stadium and a 3-1 win at Oakwell on their way to winning promotion to the Premier League.

The KC Stadium encounter was shown live on SKY- as tomorrow’s will be. Barnsley went into the game in confident mood on a run of seven games without defeat and sitting nicely in seventh position. Hull meanwhile were struggling in 18th place. What nobody had mentioned however was a 20 year old striker on loan from Manchester United called Fraizer Campbell making his debut for the Tigers. He ripped the Barnsley defence to shreds, scoring twice with Dean Marney grabbing the other. It sparked an amazing season for Campbell, who went on to notch 15 goals that season and help fire Hull to promotion via the play-offs.

Hull completed the double at Oakwell in the April with a 3-1 success. Campbell was again a chief tormenter, winning a penalty off Dennis Souza which Marney converted. Ian Ashbee and Dean Windass added further efforts before Istvan Ferenczi scored a 90th minute consolation for The Reds.

It was a completely different story the previous season when it was Barnsley who scored three times home and away.

Back in the Championship after a four year absence, Barnsley lost their first game of the season, 2-1 at home to Cardiff and it looked like being two defeats in a row as they trailed 2-0 at the KC with just nine minutes gone with former Reds youngster Jon Parkin doing the damage with a brace. Incredibly though The Reds fought back. Michael McIndoe halved the deficit right on half time and it was all square just four minutes after the break when Marc Richards grabbed a scrappy goal. The comeback was complete when Paul Hayes- who ironically returned to Oakwell yesterday- grabbed the winner 17 minutes from time.

At Oakwell the following February they thumped the Tigers 3-0 with a victory made in Hungary. Istvan Ferenczi had made a scoring debut the previous weekend in a 5-2 hammering at Southampton and against Hull he was joined by compatriot Peter Rajczi. Ferenczi went on to grab a brace and laid a goal on a plate for Rajczi. It was a crucial three points for The Reds as before the game, Hull were 21st and 22nd with just goal difference separating them.

This incredible double sequence had also occurred in the previous two meetings- 2004-2005 and 1990-1991. In 2004-2005, Hull grabbed the spoils both times in another promotion winning season for them.

They secured a 2-1 win at Oakwell in the August. Barry Conlon had given The Reds a half time lead but then they fell apart after the break allowing Stuart Elliott to equalise in the 58th minute and Michael Keane to snatch the winner just two minutes from time.

Hull then virtually secured promotion from League One with a 2-1 success in Barnsley’s first ever visit to the KC in the April and in the process ended The Reds slim play-off hopes. Barnsley went into the game unbeaten in six, having won four of them but fell behind after just four minutes when a misjudgement from goal-keeper Scott Flinders allowed Leon Cort’s header to loop over him and into the net. Daniel Nardiello equalised with a header of his own after 64 minutes but parity lasted just five minutes until Craig Fagan fired Hull back in front. Hull ended the season second, Barnsley a disappointing 13th.

It was Barnsley who grabbed the double spoils again though in the 1990-1991 season, winning 2-1 at Hull and 3-1 at home. Amazingly it is 20 years since these two sides shared the spoils- a 1-1 draw at Oakwell in February 1990.

This Season:

Like Middlesbrough, Hull are struggling to adapt to life back in the Championship after their relegation last May and go into this game without a win in their last five matches, and with just one victory in the last seven- the same as Barnsley. If you think The Reds away form is wretched then spare a thought for Hull’s travelling supporters. The Tigers have won just one of their last THIRTY ONE away fixtures and failed to win at all on the road in the Premier League last season. That one solitary success came this season with an impressive 2-0 success at Norwich in September. Their home form has also been patchy this season. Nigel Pearson’s side have won two and lost two in front of their own fans, with their last success coming 2-0 over Derby in mid September. They have also only managed two goals in their last five matches.

Barnsley will be glad to return to Oakwell after they stretched their winless away run to 13 matches with back to back 3-0 defeats to Coventry and Burnley last week. The home and away form is like chalk and cheese as the Reds have won four of their six home matches, and lost just once- a narrow 2-1 reverse to Cardiff. Also, despite only notching four goals on their travels this season, they have plundered 13 in front of their own fans- only Burnley and Derby have managed more home goals this season.

The Reds though are on the same crippling run as Hull of one win in seven and they have lost four of their last five matches.
