Npower Championship Matchday Nine: Derby County v Barnsley

Team News

Barnsley have yet again seen their absence list grow after Matty Done was forced off after just half an hour of the 1-1 draw at Birmingham on Saturday with a recurrence of a hamstring injury that had kept him out of the previous weekend’s stalemate with Watford. 18 year old Jordan Clark replaced Done at St Andrews and could be in line for his full debut tonight.

Nobody else is off the treatment table but Stephen Foster showed no ill effects of a virus on Saturday so will continue in central defence.

Interesting Stats

Barnsley’s 1-1 draw at Birmingham on Saturday was their fourth successive stalemate and their third 1-1 on the spin. It means The Reds have drawn the most games in the Championship (5) and tonight face the only side in the division yet to draw a match.

The most draws Barnsley have gained in one season was 19 in the 2004-2005 campaign but they had only drawn four after their first eight matches of that season.

Drawing is something these two sides have tended to do when they have met each other in recent years. The last three have ended in a stalemate and four of the last five, three of them goal-less.

Barnsley are undefeated in their last six meetings with the Rams and have not lost at Pride Park since November 2006.

If Barnsley win tonight it will be only their second win of the campaign. Victory at Pride Park in September 2009 was their first victory of that particular season.

The last time Barnsley had lost only two of their first eight matches was in the 2007-2008 season when they lost only two of their first 11.

Derby have made their best league start in 40 years and victory tonight would take them to the top of the Championship for at least 24 hours.

The Rams have conceded just two goals at Pride Park so far this season but before Jacob Butterfield’s 30-yard screamer, Birmingham had yet to see their defence breached at home.

The Rams are aiming to win three successive games for the second time this season, a feat they only managed once in the whole of last season.

Former Barnsley captain Jason Shackell is set to face The Reds for the first time since leaving for the Rams this summer.
