Npower Championship Matchday Twenty One: Barnsley v Ipswich Town

Team News

Barnsley are likely to make one change as they go hunting for a fifth successive victory when the SKY cameras come to Oakwell. Reds boss Keith Hill originally went with David Perkins at right back for the 2-1 win over Crystal Palace due to a thigh injury to Jay McEveley, but changed it at half-time, bringing on Scott Wiseman. It is thought Hill will prefer a natural defender in that position tomorrow but it remains to be seen whom he takes out of the side, as it was Danny Drinkwater that Wiseman replaced on Tuesday.

Apart from that Hill has no other injury worries with only Reuben Noble-Lazarus and McEveley on the sidelines. If striker Andy Gray makes it into the squad this weekend he will have to be careful, as he is one booking away from his fifth of the season.

Interesting Stats

Barnsley go looking for their fifth successive league win tomorrow. If they achieve this it will be their first quintuplet of victories since the start of that memorable 1996-1997 promotion season when Danny Wilson’s boys won the first five matches of the season.

Maybe surprisingly, despite The Reds current fine form they are only ONE point and one place better off than at this stage last season. In this campaign The Reds have reached 30 points from 20 games by winning five of their last six matches. In 2010-2011 they got to 29 points from 20 games on a run of four wins in five! Unfortunately The Reds then won just three of the next 16 matches. They also have the exact same number of points after 20 games as they did in the 2007-2008 season under Simon Davey, but as they set off on their memorable run to the FA Cup Semi-Finals they slipped down the league, winning none of their next eight matches.

The Reds are also hunting for a fourth successive home win- last achieved in 2007.

Ipswich Town meanwhile are at the opposite end of the form table to Barnsley having lost their last seven matches, seeing them drop from sixth in mid October to one place off the drop zone. It is the Tractor Boys worst run of losses since the 1994-1995 season when they were a Premier League side and lost eight on the bounce- including a 9-0 trouncing at Manchester United.

Defending is the main problem for Paul Jewell’s side this season and the 39 goals they have conceded in the Championship is the most in the division.

They also struggle to hold onto leads. They have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory four times this season- the most in division. This includes in three of the last four matches.

Ipswich have won just one of their last five trips to Oakwell- in January 2009.

Goals should be guaranteed tomorrow- there has only ever been one goal-less draw between the two sides in 37 meetings and Ipswich have registered only one this season.
