Palace Match Off!!!

Last updated : 06 February 2009 By Rob Miles (barnsley Boy)

Barnsley's home game with Crystal Palace tomorrow has been postponed! Like at Hillsborough on Tuesday, the Oakwell stadium pitch is playable due to the club having undersoil heating but the surrounding roads and the stadium have been deemed unsuitable for supporters. Temperatures are expected to reach -4 or -5 tonight and the roads and streets will become considerably icy.

www.barnsleyfc.co.uk reports:

FOLLOWING an early inspection of the Oakwell pitch and the area surrounding the stadium, Saturday's clash with Crystal Palace has been postponed.

This decision has been taken following consultation with the relevant authorities and has been made with the interests of spectator safety in mind following a week of heavy snow and freezing temperatures. Although the Oakwell pitch is playable, the surrounding areas have been deemed as being too treacherous for supporters attending the game.

No new date has yet been confirmed.

Barnsley Football Club are disappointed that, after a lot of hard work by the groundstaff, although the pitch has been deemed playable by the match referee, an inspection by the Safety Advisory Group both inside and outside the ground has prompted them to make a decision to postpone the match. The areas were dangerous due to the amount of snow and ice. With temperatures expected reach minus four / five this evening the situation would not get any better overnight.
