BBC Radio Sheffield has reported that most of Barnsley's senior first team players have not been paid their April salaries.
The money was due at the end of last month, but owner and Mayor of Barnsley Peter Doyle is in the Ukraine on mayoral business and pays staff via personal cheques.
He is not due back until next Tuesday although he is understood to have given assurances that the money will be will be paid in full.
