Forest Green Rovers are set to sign former Reds striker Andy Rammell.

The 36-year-old veteran retired from professional football last season because of persistent knee problems while at Bristol Rovers.

However, Forest Green manager Tim Harris said: "Andy had problems with a knee injury while he was at Bristol Rovers and decided to have an operation. He has worked very hard on his rehabilitation.

"He is away on holiday next week, and I am hoping to sort things out with him when he comes back."

Rammell joined Barnsley from Manchester United for £100,000 and made 149 appearances during 1990 and 1996, scoring 44 goals in the league.

Rammell then joined Southend United scoring 13 goals in 50 league matches, before he went on to Walsall, managing 23 goals in 60 games, then to Wycombe where he had 25 goals in 69 league matches.

Harris said he has followed Rammell's career since he left Atherstone, when they were in the Southern League, in 1989 to join Manchester United.

"I have been impressed with Andy's positive attitude and determination throughout his career," said Harris.

"He would certainly strengthen our forward line and would also be a tremendous benefit to our younger players."
