Reds Face Iron Mighty Test In Cup

Last updated : 29 November 2009 By Rob Miles (Barnsley Boy)

Barnsley will face the short trip to North Lincolnshire in the third round of the 2009-2010 FA Cup after being paired with fellow Championship side Scunthorpe United. It means a second New Year’s trip to Glanford Park in the space of three years after a league meeting there on New Year’s Day 2008. This tie will take place on either the 2nd January or 3rd January 2010 and will allow Reds fans to see former players Paul Hayes, Grant McCann and Sam Togwell who now all ply their trade with the Iron who currently sit 20th in the Championship.

Barnsley and Scunthorpe have met twice before in the FA Cup with both ties going to replays.

Firstly in 1964 they met at the Old Show Ground and a 2-2 draw was played out before Barnsley won the replay 3-2 after extra time. More recently they met in the third round in 2003-2004 at Oakwell, but this finished in a goal-less stalemate and Scunthorpe won the replay 2-0 with goals from Steve Torpey and Jamie McCombe.
