Reds Get Pre-Season Off To Winning Start

An impromptu friendly with Scottish Premier League side St Mirren saw The Reds get their pre-season campaign for the 2012-2013 season off to a winning start courtesy of an outstanding effort from new recruit Kelvin Etuhu.

The former Manchester City youngster scored what goalkeeper Luke Steele described as “one of the best pre season goals I’ve ever seen” to earn Keith Hill’s side a 1-0 victory.

The friendly, which was not planned, occurred as both sides were preparing for new seasons north and south of the border in Marbella.

Hill told the club’s official website:

“It was a training exercise that gave us an indication of the players fitness and where they’re at. I was really pleased with it and am happy with their progress so far.

“We played two lots of 45 minutes, I was pleased with the application of every individual. To be honest, I wasn’t too keen on the idea of playing a match at first but I’m glad we did in the end, even though it was a last minute arrangement job.

“Kelvin’s picking up a bit, fitness wise, but he’s got undoubted ability and he demonstrated that during the match.

“Tomorrow we will have another double session after the lads day off today. It is extremely hot out here and it’s been very productive.

“We’ll return on Saturday and am looking forward to our first match on Tuesday at Alfreton, we’ll be taking our squad- including the youngsters- and I’m sure it will be a competitive affair."
