Reds Have Hope For Pope.

Barnsley are hoping to sign Port Vale striker Tom Pope before the transfer window slams shut on Monday.

The 29 year old has bagged nine goals in 18 appearances for the Valiants, although five of those were notched in the first four games of the season.

The former Crewe and Rotherham man was a target for Barnsley earlier in the season but suffered a serious knee injury in October that sidelined him for three months.

Pope returned this month and ironically is set to start for Vale at Oakwell tomorrow.

When pressed on the potential signing of a player who has scored 53 times in 145 games for Port Vale (31 one of which came in their 2012-2013 promotion winning season), Wilson said:

"He's very experienced and scores goals at this level. Whether it gets over the line in time's another matter,"

One sticking point to the deal could be the fact Pope is out of contract in the summer so Barnsley may decide to wait until then to try and sign him for free rather than pay what could be a six figure sum now.
