"I am disappointed I thought I had a chance," he told the Barnsley Star.
"I've only missed three games all season - two for a suspension and one through sickness.
"I was a bit upset, I've enjoyed my time at Barnsley. It was an honour being captain when Peter wasn't playing."
Likewise, midfielder Steve Hayward said: "I was hopeful of being offered something but that's football, I suppose."
"I'd like to have stayed because I think Barnsley are a club going places."
