John Rooney- the brother of Manchester United and England star Wayne- is set to cap his four week trial at Oakwell by signing a short term deal, possibly until the end of the season.
The 21 year old attacking midfielder, who like his famous older sibling started his career with Everton, has more recently been with Orlando City in America.
He will sign with the Reds subject to international clearance but is unlikely to be involved in the first team for a number of weeks.
Meanwhile sources in Lancashire are claiming Burnley considered approaching Keith Hill about their vacant managerial position, but decided against it. The Clarets are searching for a new manager after Eddie Howe made a surprise decision to return to former club Bournemouth last week.
Barnsley born Mick McCarthy is now the favourite.
