Barnsley have today signed Manchester City striker Devante Cole on loan until January.

The 19-year-old son of former Manchester United striker Andy Cole is yet to make a senior appearance in league football but is highly rated at the Etihad and has featured for England at Under 18 level.

Manager Danny Wilson told www.barnsleyfc.co.uk:

“First and foremost, I’d like to thank Manchester City for allowing such a promising young player to join us, they trust us with his development.

“What we’ve got is a highly-promising young lad who wants to start his league football off. He’s had plenty of opportunities to go to clubs but he’s decided we are the right one for him. We’re very privileged in that respect.

“Now we have to try and develop him by giving him games at first-team level. What he has got is great pace and an eye for goal. He can be a very exciting acquisition for us.”

It will be hoped Devante can gain the knack of scoring in a Barnsley shirt as his father was often the scourge of The Reds, netting FIVE times against them in the 1997-1998 season including a hat-trick at Old Trafford in a 7-0 win for his United side. He also scored in their 2-0 win at Oakwell on the final day of the Premier League season and in Barnsley’s historic 3-2 FA Cup success.

Devante Cole was named on the bench for Barnsley’s clash against Coventry in Northampton tonight.
