Reuben The Rouser

Reuben Noble-Lazarus's record-breaking debut for Barnsley in last night's 3-0 defeat at Ipswich has got the football world talking.

At 15 years and 45 days old, Lazarus became the youngster player EVER in the Football League, beating a record set 69 years ago!

Bradford Park Avenue's Albert Geldard held the record when he made his debut in 1929 ages 15 years and 158 days old whilst Wrexham's Ken Roberts equalled that in 1951. Both trail Lazarus however and his debut has taken the attention away from Barnsley's league predicament, with corporations such as BBC and ITV and several national newspapers talking about Lazarus rather than the match last night itself.

Under pressure Reds boss Simon Davey will not rush the young lad as he told the BBC:

He has only trained a couple of times with the first team but they have taken him under their wing. I think if they're good enough, they're old enough.

I have kept an eye on him over the last two years and have tried to integrate him as quickly as I could into the first team.

"I was academy manager two years ago and I gave him a start in the under-18s," said Davey.

"He did well when he came on. He didn't give the ball away.

"He scored a hat-trick for the youth team against Sheffield United on Saturday.

"We need to look after him. He has got to be dipped in and perhaps dipped back out.

"We've arranged with his school that we can get him out for two days a week so he can train with us."

"He is a confident lad but he is still only 15. He is a talent and we need to nurture him in the right way."

The club have agreed with Lazarus' Huddersfield school that the youngster can train at Oakwell on Tuesday's and Wednesday's.
