Reds chairman Peter Ridsdale said: "He's very good at bringing young players through the academy and giving them their chance.

"That's something we wish to reinforce at Barnsley - Paul's ambition matches ours because he wants to see us as soon as possible in a higher league."

Former manager Gudjon Thordarson believes he should have been given more time to turn things around at Oakwell.

"I came in under very difficult circumstances and I tried to change things around," said the Icelander, who had eight months in charge.

"The club has been in a downward spiral since spring 2000 when they lost to Ispwich in the play-off final."

"At least I was professional in my approach and tried to take things forward. I was fully committed."
