Reds chairman Peter Ridsdale released the following statement on the official Barnsley FC website.
He said: "I am delighted to announce that with immediate effect Gordon Shepherd is appointed a Director of Barnsley Football Club (2002) Limited.
"Gordon is a long standing Barnsley fan as well as having a distinguished business career, most recently in the Sheffield, Lincolnshire and Dearne Valley areas.
"As part of the continuing rebuilding of the financial health of Barnsley Football Club, Gordon's expertise and skills, as well as his love for Barnsley FC, will be a tremendous help and benefit. I am sure that everyone will join me in offering our congratulations".
