Interesting Stats

Each of the last three clashes between these two clubs has finished 1-1 and four of the last six.

Ipswich are unbeaten against Barnsley in six meetings too.

The Reds have won just two of the last 11 meetings.

These games are usually tight. No team has scored more than once in any of the past four meetings or five of the last six. The one exception was the eight-goal thriller at Oakwell in December 2011 when Barnsley led 2-0 at half time but ended up losing 5-3. That game was the last time Barnsley led a league match at half time but went on to lose.

Former Reds defender Mick McCarthy has done a fine job at Portman Road. When the Barnsley born 54 year old took over on the 2nd November 2012, the Tractor Boys were rock bottom of the Championship, five points from safety. He guided them to 14th and has now set about mounting a play-off push.

Last weekend’s 1-0 win over Bolton left them seventh in the table, just four points off the top six.

Ipswich have lost just three of their last 15 matches in all competitions and are unbeaten in their last three.

McCarthy has made them a very hard team to beat. Although they have been defeated eight times in the league this season, only two of them have been by more than one goal.

Ipswich have managed just three wins on their travels this season, the joint lowest among the division’s top 16 sides, but they have lost just four times, only QPR, Burnley and Derby have lost less.

Remarkably Ipswich have the second-worst record in the Championship this season after scoring first, but the best record after conceding first.

Mick McCarthy has won only three of his 12 games against his hometown team as a manager, losing six.

Its just one win in 10 now for Barnsley who reside five points from safety in the Championship relegation zone.

They have won just one of their last nine at home in all competitions and just three all season.

The Reds have conceded 25 league goals at Oakwell; nobody has conceded more home goals.

They have also only managed three clean sheets from their 27 Championship matches, the lowest in the division.

Last weekend’s blank at Hillsborough was the first time Barnsley had failed to score in 2014 or indeed in six matches.

Ref Watch:

Darren Bond

This will be Bond’s third Championship game of the season. He has done six League One, eight League Two, one Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and one FA Cup game.

He has never before officiated a Barnsley or Ipswich match.
