Southend manager Phil Brown said:

“It was a good performance in the first half especially and the crown jewels were out on show today,”

"It could have gone either way in the first half but we played some great football to get in the final third.

“It was a hard game to manage whether you were a manager, player or referee and it was one of the best refereeing performances I’ve seen in a long time.

“It was a tough and committed game and the best clean sheet and result since I’ve been here, even more so than Wembley and games like that. The performance and result shows that we belong here.”

Interesting Stats:

Barnsley are unbeaten in their last six trips to Southend, winning three of those including both of the last two.

Three of the last five clashes overall have come in the FA Cup, and they last met at this level exactly 10 years when both meetings ended in a draw… and both sides were promoted at the end of the season.

One side have kept a clean sheet in three of the last five meetings.

Southend have won five of their last six matches in all competitions, including four in the league.

Their one blip came courtesy of a 1-0 reverse at Burton… via an own goal.

After starting the season winless in their first five matches, they have won six of the subsequent eight.

Joe Pigott has scored five goals in his last five appearances for the Shrimpers
