The Clearout Begins

Reds boss Simon Davey has begun his spring cleaning by making Paul Reid, Nick Colgan and Andy Johnson available for transfer.

The trio have made just eight Championship appearances between them this season and in Reid and Colgan's case have seemingly past their sell by date at Oakwell.

The Johnson case seems more bizarre. Signed in the summer by Davey on a free transfer from Leicester, the defensive midfielder started the first four games of the campaign, impressed and then was unceremoniously dumped and hasn't been seen on the pitch since.

Here is my view of the trio

Nick Colgan

Looked like a complete misfit when signed by Paul Hart in the summer of 2004 and spent the majority of his first season at the club on loan in Scotland. Under the stewardship of Andy Ritchie though he became a star as The Reds won promotion from League One in 2005-2006.

The Republic of Ireland international kept 19 clean sheets and was voted Player of the Year. He capped the season by saving the decisive penalty in the Play-Off Final shootout win over Swansea City.

He fell away badly in the Championship however as The Reds let in a staggering 85 goals, the most in the division.

He started in goal for the opening game of the 2007-2008 campaign- a 4-1 home defeat to Coventry but was deposed by new capture Heinz Muller and hasn't appeared since. Handed in a transfer request in October.

Barnsley Boy's Verdict

A legend in the 2005-2006 season and deserved every plaudit that came his way. It was fitting that his save took us up. But either side of that he has had two indifferent seasons. Muller has knocked him completely out of the side. Decision to transfer list him: CORRECT

Paul Reid

Another one of Hart's 2004 signings and impressed in The Reds rearguard. Another who came to the fore in the 2005-2006 season when made skipper by Ritchie.

Last season proved he wasn't Championship class though as he was constantly bullied and outpaced by Championship strikers.

Started this season alongside Dennis Souza in defence but a red card at Colchester in the second league game proved his death knell.

An injury time substitute appearance in the 3-2 win at Southampton in September is the sum total of his impact since. Brian Howard takes the captaincy permanently

Barnsley Boy's Verdict:

An excellent 2005-2006 campaign when his towering no nonsense displays made him a firm fans favourite. Like Colgan though out of his depth in the Championship. Always gave 100%. A dying breed of player! Decision to Transfer List him: CORRECT

Andy Johnson

Well what can be said? Signed on a free transfer from Leicester in the summer and started the first four games of the season. Impressing in those games he looked to be a shrewd bargain capture but was suddenly dropped for the home game with Scunthorpe and hasn't appeared since. Has cropped up on the bench in recent weeks but hasn't made it onto the pitch

Barnsley Boy's Verdict

A quite bizarre signing if Davey obviously doesn't rate him. I personally thought he looked an accomplished player alongside Howard in the middle- certainly a better player than Sam Togwell.

The only think I can think of is there has been a behind the scenes bust-up between AJ and the backroom staff and that has sent him towards the exit door. Decision To Transfer List Him: WRONG

Tykesmad's Verdicts

Nick Colgan

Well, a hero in the Play-off final who has been replaced by a hero in all aspects. Whether or not Heinz Muller leaves this month he will still remain the best keeper I have ever seen at Oakwell. Nick has had his time at the top but he has to accept that he has been ousted by the better keeper.

RIGHT to transfer list him.

Paul Reid

Not quick enough to keep up with any of the strikers in this division, except perhaps Teddy Sheringham! At League One Paul Reid has his level, not a Championship player and our defence has been a lot more sturdy without him in the side.

RIGHT to transfer list him

Andy Johnson

Now this is a weird one. He was signed in late July, impressed in his handful of appearances and hasn't played since. As BB said there must've been a bust up of some sort behind the scenes, just like Kayode Odejayi performs "behind the scenes". Wrong to transfer list him if Davey doesn't think he's good enough. Right if he doesn't want to stay at the club.

RIGHT if there's been a bust up and WRONG if Davey doesn't think he's good enough
