Barnsley went for third choice West Brom goalkeeper Luke Steele after Aston Villa's Thomas Sorensen demanded £26,000 a week to join on an emergency loan.
Sorensen who has played 158 appearances for Villa and has 51 Denmark caps was Simon Davey's first choice to replace Heinz Muller and Tony Warner between the posts at Anfield on Saturday but the club baulked when Sorensen asked for the same wages he earns at Villa Park.
