Barnsley are hopeful of having Jamaican international midfielder O'Neil Thompson signed on a permanent deal by Saturday's massive season opener at Sheffield Wednesday.

Thompson, 25 has been on trial at Oakwell from Norwegian side Notodden FK and impressed massively as a holding midfielder in the 1-1 draw with Manchester City last weekend despite coming in as a defender and having only one training session beforehand.

Boss Simon Davey told Barnsley Player:

"O'Neil has come in and done very well. We have spoken with him and agreed a deal to bring him here and we are now trying to sort things out with his club".

Davey also admitted a fee has been agreed with Liverpool for winger Adam Hammill but as reported yesterday he could face a fight with Leeds United to sign him.
