Constantine deal falls through as Wright joins Darlo

Barnsley's search for a new striker must continue.

18 goal Port Vale striker Leon Constantine's move to Oakwell has fallen through.

A statement from www.port-vale-co.uk read:

Leon Constantine's proposed move to Championship outfit Barnsley hit a snag this afternoon and has now been called off.

Martin Foyle says the move to bring in Marc Richards as part of the deal will not go through now, as it was dependent on Constantine agreeing to join the Yorkshire outfit.

He said: "Leon's deal fell through late this afternoon at their end, so he will be back in training on Wednesday morning with the kids." (The first team squad have the day off)

"He will be involved in Saturday's game against Northampton in some capacity, depending on his frame of mind. I will sit down and have a talk with him and assess the situation."

The move is a massive blow as The Reds has scored just 2 goals in their last 7 games.

The cancelled deal also means Marc Richards remains at the club for the time being.

Whilst Reds boss Simon Davey told www.barnsleyfc.co.uk after last nights abject Cup exit:

"There were always going to be a lot of hurdles to get over when you are trying to put together a deal like this involving two players and two clubs. Leon had to agree to come to us and Marc Richards had to say yes to Port Vale.

"The deal broke down at both ends. Marc did not agree with Port Vale and Leon could not decide whether to accept our offer. It came to a head on Tuesday afternoon and the deal was called off at our end.

"I do not know whether it can be resurrected at this moment in time.

"We have things in a the pipeline and we do have a lot of offers in for players at the moment, several of which are strikers. We are waiting on the clubs getting back to us"

One striker has left Oakwell for a month however.

Tommy Wright who has just completed a stint at League Two leaders Walsall where he scored 2 goals in 6 appearances, has moved further down the League Two ladder to join Dave Penney's Darlington team who sit in 16th place. Wright will spend an initial month on loan with a view to a permanent move after turning down an offer from Rotherham United.
