Where Oh Where Is Whaley

Barnsley have made a shock move into the loan market on the eve of the South Yorkshire derby with Sheffield United by signing winger Simon Whaley on loan from Championship rivals Preston North End.

Whaley, 23, can play on either wing which will prove a boost for Reds boss Simon Davey as the left side of The Reds midfield has proved a problem. Mounir El Haimour and Martin Devaney have had limited success there this season.

It is expected Whaley will go straight into the squad for tomorrow's game but will probably have to settle for a place on the bench with Davey loathe to change a winning side (with the exception of the suspended Stephen Foster.)

Whaley signed for Preston from Bury in 2006 and has made 119 apperances for North End, scoring 17 goals. He has made only three starts this season though.

Davey told www.barnsleyfc.co.uk:

"Simon is someone we have monitored and admired for a while. Kelham (O'Hanlon) and Ryan (Kidd) both spent time with him at Bury before his move to Preston and spoke very, very highly of him.

"An opportunity like this was too good to pass up when we knew he was available and Simon is a player who can operate on both wings and can slot in perfectly to any of the systems we are playing at this moment in time".
