Wigan 2-2 Barnsley (Barnsley win 4-2 on penalties)

Last updated : 05 December 2015 By Rob Miles (BarnsleyBoy)

Barnsley are through to the Northern Final of the Johnstones Paint Trophy where they will face either Fleetwood or Morecambe in a two legged affair for the right to go to Wembley. The first leg will be played the week commencing the 11th January and the second leg the week commencing the 25th January.

Just like in the Play-Off Final of 2006, Barnsley won 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

This result means Barnsley have won five of the six semi-finals they are been in (1910 defeated Everton 3-0 in a FA Cup replay, 1912 defeated Swindon 1-0 in a FA Cup replay, 2000 defeated Birmingham 5-2 on aggregate in the Division One Play-Offs, 2006 defeated Huddersfield 3-2 in the League One Play-Offs, 2008 lost 1-0 to Cardiff in the FA Cup, 2015 defeated Wigan 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the Johnstones Paint Trophy)

Barnsley opened the scoring in the Johnstones Paint Trophy for only the second time in their last five matches in the competition.

Adam Hammill is now the Reds joint top scorer in the competition, along with Marley Watkins (2)

Barnsley led at half time for only the second time in 15 matches.

The Reds have now won four Johnstones Paint Trophy matches this season- they had only won ONCE before in the competition- from five seasons of competing in it.

They have scored two goals in each of those games.

To put their cup exploits into perspective they have won four in the JPT and one in the League Cup to equal five… the same amount as they have won in League One this season!

This was The Reds second penalty shootout this season and they have won both. They have now won seven of their last eight with a 4-2 reverse to an Oldham side managed by Lee Johnson in the first round of the JPT last season the only blemish.

They have though now gone 14 games in all competitions without a clean sheet, their worst run since August- November 2013 (also 14)

Barnsley have picked up at least two yellow cards in 12 of their last 14 matches.

They received four in this match, their most in a single game this season.

Conor Hourihane received his fifth yellow card of the season so will miss next weekend’s visit to Colchester.

Barnsley have had back-to-back Saturday’s without defeat for the first time since September.

Barnsley won at Wigan for only the second time ever, and for the first time ever at the DW Stadium. Both Barnsley’s wins at Wigan have been in cup competitions.

Wigan missed two penalties in the shootout- both from ex Barnsley players, Craig Davies and David Perkins.
