Barnsley 0-2 Peterborough United

Last updated : 20 April 2022 By Rob Miles

Barnsley are now just a point away from relegation following a shocking home defeat to the side who sat only one place and one point above them before the start of play.

This 2-0 defeat plus a draw for Reading sees Barnsley 11 points adrift of safety with only 12 left to play for and they will be relegated on Friday if they lose on SKY at Huddersfield and/or Reading win at Hull the following day.

This was Barnsley’s ninth home league defeat of the season, their most in a single campaign since 2017-2018 when they also lost nine – they haven’t lost more than this since 2013-2014 (10)

The incredible run of two specific score-lines continues with this the eighth time in the last nine outings a game has finished 2-0 or 1-1 as have nine of the last 11 with this the eighth 2-0 scoreline of the season.

This was the first time in seven home games that Barnsley have failed to score and indeed had opened the scoring in all the previous six.

Peterborough came into the game with only Barnsley having a worse away record than them this season. This was the first time this season the Posh have kept an away clean sheet with their tally of 51 away Championship goals conceded comfortably the most in the division.

This was Barnsley’s first defeat in five against Peterborough with Barnsley winning three of the previous four and also ended a run of four successive clean sheets against Posh.

Barnsley had 11 shots on target, the first time they have reached double figures this season and indeed first time in a league game since October 2020 v QPR (also 11)

Barnsley won nine corners, their joint most this season.

Peterborough manager Grant McCann said:

"It was a good result for us. I don't think it was the best of games to be honest, it was a scrappy, tense affair.

"But I'm really pleased with our lads, we dug in, stayed strong and were made to defend. And when we needed to be clinical we were.

"The boys have put an unbelievable shift in over the last nine games. I'm pleased with the reaction the players have given me.

"All we can do is focus on us. If we somehow stay up then great. If we don't we'll have a plan and try and put a squad together to try and win the league."
