Barnsley 0-3 Ipswich Town

Last updated : 27 April 2023 By Rob Miles

Barnsley will definitely have to settle for the play-offs as their automatic promotion hopes were ended by a home to defeat to Ipswich who cemented second place and can seal a return to the Championship this weekend

This result ended the Reds run of nine successive home victories and was the first time in 10 Oakwell matches that they had failed to score – ironically that was also a 3-0 defeat to a promotion rival, Bolton Wanderers on the 2nd January.

These two games plus the defeat at Derby back in August are the only occasions the Reds have been two goals behind at half time in the league this season.

It is the third time they have lost 3-0 at home in League One this season – also doing so against Wycombe Wanderers in August.

This was Barnsley’s fifth home defeat in the league in total this season and they have failed to score in all of them.

Indeed they have now failed to net in eight of their 11 league defeats overall this season.

It is the first time Barnsley have lost three third tier games by at least three goals since 1979-1980.

Barnsley have conceded the opening goal in 13 of their 44 league games so far this season and have failed to win any (D2 L11)

The game swung on two Ipswich goals in the last two minutes of the first half, only the third time this season the Reds have conceded in the last five minutes of the first half (also doing so at Plymouth and at home to MK Dons)

Ipswich should have been 3-0 up after 55 minutes but Nathan Broadhead saw his penalty saved by Harry Isted, the sixth penalty conceded in the league by the Reds this season and the first one not converted.

Indeed it is the first time an opponent has not scored a penalty since the final game of last season when Jack Walton denied West Brom’s Karlan Grant a hattrick.

The Tractor Boys did eventually get their third though through ex red Conor Chaplin who has bagged home and away against Barnsley this season – he and his team-mate Sam Morsy in the reverse fixture are the only ex Reds to net against them this season.

The three goals conceded saw Barnsley break the 40 goal mark for league goals conceded this season – they only conceded 39 in their last League One campaign, however this is the only time in the last 45 years that they have conceded less than 40 goals in a season.

Josh Benson was booked in injury time, the 13th time Barnsley have had a player yellow carded in the 90th minute or later this season (all comps)

Benson is the 14th yellow card for a Barnsley substitute this season (all comps)
