Barnsley 0-3 Lincoln City

Last updated : 01 September 2022 By Rob Miles

Barnsley’s EFL Trophy campaign got off to the worst possible start as they lost 3-0 at home for the second time in a row.

It is the first time they have lost successive games by 3 or more goals since 1971 when they lost 4-0 to Aston Villa and then 4-1 to Chesterfield in the third tier.

This is the first time Barnsley have lost their opening game of an EFL Trophy campaign since a 5-2 defeat to Doncaster in the Northern Section First Round of the then named LDV Vans Trophy. They had won three opening round/first group games since.

This was also Barnsley’s heaviest EFL Trophy defeat since that Doncaster game.

Barnsley were 2-0 down at home at half time for the first time since December 2020 against Bournemouth.

It is the first time in a cup tie home or away since October 2014 at Oldham in the Johnstones Paint Trophy and the first time at Oakwell since a League Cup First Round tie against Blackpool in August 2003.

The last three matches at Oakwell have all finished 3-0, the first time it has been the same scoreline in three successive matches at Oakwell since January/February when there were three successive 1-0 scorelines.

Teddy Bishop scored two of Lincoln’s three goals, the first opponent to net a brace at Oakwell since Daniel Johnson for Preston in the final Oakwell game of 2021-2022.

James Norwood received the seventh red card of his career (and second against Lincoln), the first Barnsley player to be sent off Alex Mowatt at Wycombe in March 2021 (however this was later rescinded)

It is the first Barnsley red card in the first half of a match since Michal Helik at Reading in September 2020.

It was the first Barnsley red card in a cup tie since Joe Williams at Millwall in the FA Cup Third Round in January 2018.

A much changed Barnsley outfit saw a start for Herbie Kane, his first for Barnsley since the FA Cup Fifth Round against Chelsea in February 2021.
