New Barnsley boss Paul Hart was delighted with his side's performance in the goalless draw with play off hopeful's Luton at Oakwell.

Former Nottingham Forest manager Hart had replaced the sacked Gudjon Thordarson on Thursday afternoon and had spent less than three hours working with his new squad on the training ground before the meeting with the Hatters.

Hart said: "Considering the short time I had with the players, the lengthy injury list, and the sudden virus that had swept through the club, I was delighted with a clean sheet and a hard earned point.

"We had lost Craig Ireland through illness just before kick-off and midfielder Alex Neil was also feeling the effects of the virus but, despite being down to the bare bones, we played some good stuff and created our fair share of chances.

"The players appear receptive to my ideas and I am willing to have a go. I believe we can improve on this performance and use it as a foundation to push on.

"I still think we are in a challenging position for the play-offs." Although Barnsley did carve out at least three good chances, it was visitors Luton who had by far the most clear cut openings.

Target man Steve Howard was the main culprit, however, as he spurned three close range opportunities to secure all three points.

Barnsley had the first opportunity on ten minutes when Michael Boulding managed to stab a low shot past Luton's Danish keeper Morten Hyldgaard, but defender Emmerson Boyce got back to clear off the line.

Seconds later Luton sprang forward and Howard was sent clean through but struck the outside of the post from 12 yards.

Just before half-time Boyce ventured up for a corner and found himself unmarked six yards out, but he wildly volleyed over the top.

Just after the hour Howard should have broken the deadlock when he met a great cross from 17-year-old full-back Keith Keane, but he sent his header straight at ex-Luton keeper Marlon Beresford.

Seven minutes later striker Daniel Nardiello, on loan from Manchester United, thought he had given Barnsley the lead when his shot looked to have crossed the line before Coyne hooked it clear but only a corner was given.

That was swung over by Robbie Williams and Boulding's close range header was brilliantly tipped over by Hyldgaard.

Luton raised their game in the closing minutes and Howard had another header eight yards out but he was denied by a point blank save from Beresford.

Then in the very last minute of normal time Howard finally managed to beat Beresford only to see Barnsley skipper Peter Handyside produce a spectacular goalline clearance.
