Barnsley 1-0 Yeovil Town

Don't let the result deceive you. This one of the worst Barnsley sides for quite a few years, just as well that Yeovil were equally as poor.

There was no imagination, no cohesion and realistically no chance of even a play-off place.

We have been continuously told about this passing football, so where is it?

Long ball after long ball after long ball, it won't attract the fans I'm afraid Mr Shepherd.

If there was a goal it was only going to come from 12 yards or by a defensive mistake, luckily for the Reds we got it.

79 extremely tedious minutes had passed at a sun drenched Oakwell when finally a piece of passing saw Neil Austin stride into the area, where he was given a slight nudge and needed no convincing to go down.

Robbie Williams wrestled the ball out of Stephen McPhail's hands and sent Yeovil keeper Chris Weale the wrong way.

What had proceeded in the first 45 minutes is hardly worth mentioning and I really feel for the fans that went to Colchester AND today.

McPhail saw a beautiful free-kick tipped over whilst Jacob Burns blazed over from a good position.

Barnsley's failing in the past couple of season has been the fact that the players seem to want to pass the ball in rather than take a stab.

In the second half this improved... slightly.

Shuker forced a good save out of Weale and from a seemingly unmissable position Hayes blazed the rebound over.

Burns struck a post and Kay forced another splendid stop from Weale. See what happens when you actually shoot boys.

One positive we can take out of this game is surprisingly the defence.

There have been constant shouts and letters screaming for a big 7ft defender but Matt Carbon and Paul Reid were outstanding in front of the again shaky Nick Colgan, what we really need is some support for Paul Hayes, Barry Conlon was poor throughout whilst Danny Nardiello is currently injured and hasn't really shown much this season so far.

Things really do need improving as table topping Brentford visit Saturday, lets hope its not a massacre.

Barnsley Ratings:

Nick Colgan: No one can fault his shot stopping attributes but in the air he's a nightmare, collided with his defenders on too many occasions. 6

Dale Tonge: Gives 100% every game and never scared to put his foot where it hurts. 7

Matt Carbon: As long as he stays injury free we have got the "colossus" that so many fans are screaming for. Marshalled the defence well. 7

Paul Reid: Linked well with Carbon and dealt with most of the high balls comfortably. Booked. 6

Neil Austin: Caught out a bit too often for my liking, Amankwaah gave him a difficult time. 5

Robbie Williams: Looks a safe bet on the left but still could struggle if Brian Howard's any good. Need ice cold nerves for the penalty. 6

Stephen McPhail: Seems more aggressive this season but isn't given the ball enough. Too many high balls isolate him from the game. Subbed. 6

Man of The Match: Matt Carbon.
