Barnsley 1-1 Birmingham City

Last updated : 29 August 2021 By Rob Miles

Barnsley drew for the third time in five league outings and have now won 1 drawn 1 lost 1 from their first three Oakwell games of 2021-2022.

It is the first time they have drawn as many as three of their first five league games of a season since 1998-1999.

It is also the first time since that season that the Reds have lost only one of their first five league games of a second tier season.

It is the second time in three seasons that the first three Oakwell league games of a season have produced each result (also 2019-2020)

Callum Styles had given Barnsley an early lead with a fine strike into the top corner from 25 yards - the seventh game Styles has scored in for the Reds and first time they have not gone on to win.

His effort after six minutes is Barnsley's earliest goal in a game since Carlton Morris netted after two minutes against Rotherham, nine league games ago.

Four of Barnsley's five league goals so far this season have come in the first half.

Lukas Jutkiewicz scored Birmingham's equaliser, his third career goal against Barnsley.

This is the first time this season (all comps) that both teams have scored in the first half of a Barnsley game and indeed the first time in eight since the final regular game of 2020-2021 against Norwich.

Markus Schopp made only two substitutions in the game, the first time he has not used all three allotted changes as Barnsley manager. It is the first time Barnsley have not made at least three substitutions in a game since Huddersfield away on the 21st April.

Barnsley are now unbeaten in their last 43 games (all comps) in which they have opened the scoring with this the seventh time they have not won in that run (W36 D7)

It is the first time they have failed to win successive matches when scoring first since a run of three successive matches between the 17th October and 24th October 2020.

Barnsley are unbeaten in three meetings with Birmingham and have lost only two of the last 10 (W5 D3 L2)

They have lost only one of the last five Oakwell meetings (W2 D2 L1)

There were only four corners in the game, the lowest in a Barnsley game since the Norwich match at the end of 2020-2021 (3)

Birmingham manager Lee Bowyer said:

"Disappointed to be coming away with a point, and it's a credit to the players, the chances we created, we should be leaving with three.

"Two teams, high energy, both sets of players want to win. And we come away from home, stood up to that test, against a good Barnsley side, and man for man I thought we were better.

"If you go behind I think we have a different belief now that we have players that can create chances from the drop of the hat. Whether that's from open play, set-pieces we're very strong as well, so I always say if we can keep a clean sheet we will win a lot of games because I believe we'll score in most games.
