Barnsley 1-1 West Bromwich Albion

Last updated : 28 December 2019 By Rob Miles

Barnsley scored a 90+minute goal for the fifth time this season to rescue a point against the league leaders and extend their unbeaten run to four matches.

It is Barnsley's longest unbeaten run in the Championship since November 2017 when they also won two and drew two.

The five last minute strikes have earnt Barnsley five points with only Conor Chaplin's last minute goal against Hull not a points earning effort. Without those five points the Reds would be six points adrift of safety rather than one point.

Following on from Schmidt's 94th minute winner at Millwall it is the first time Barnsley have scored last minute goals in successive games since January when Alex Mowatt netted on 90+2 against

Bradford and then Cameron McGeehan scored on 90 at AFC Wimbledon.

Ilias Chair scored a 94th minute goal for QPR at Oakwell meaning that there has been a 90+minute goal in three successive Barnsley games also for the first time since January when prior to the Bradford and Wimbledon games Chris Wood had scored a 90+2 minute penalty for Burnley in the third round of the FA Cup.

It has occurred in five of Barnsley's last six games with only the 1-1 draw with Reading not having a 90+minute goal since the end of November.

Out of the last 30 goals in a Barnsley game, 21 have been scored in the second half with 10 coming after the 80th minute.

Aapo Halme scored Barnsley's last gasp equaliser, his third goal for the Reds, all of which have come at Oakwell and all in draws.

Conor Chaplin assisted the goal - he has now been involved in nine goals in the last eight games (7 goals, 2 assists)

For the second time this season Barnsley's opponents scored from a poor goalkeeping clearance (Brad Collins also doing so v Stoke) it is the 47th league goal of the season conceded by Barnsley in 2019-2020, three behind Luton who have conceded the most in the Championship (50)

Barnsley have gone 18 games without a clean sheet, their longest run since a run of 20 between 3rd October 2015 and 9th January 2016 (4 Football League Trophy games, 1 FA Cup, 15 League One)

Barnsley managed to concede less than at least two goals in successive games for only the second time this season.

Gerhard Struber has made only 2 substitutions in seven of his eight games in charge.

Alex Mowatt was one of those two substitutions - only the second time this season he has not completed the 90 minutes from 22 appearances (also brought off at Sheffield Wednesday)

As we end the decade Barnsley's final home game of a year for the 2010s is as follows:

2010 - Barnsley 1-2 Burnley
2011 - Barnsley 4-1 Leeds
2012 - Barnsley 1-3 Blackburn
2013 - Barnsley 1-2 Derby
2014 - Barnsley 2-0 Leyton Orient
2015 - Barnsley 4-2 Blackpool
2016 - Barnsley 2-2 Birmingham
2017 - Barnsley 1-1 Reading
2018 - Barnsley 2-1 Charlton
2019 - Barnsley 1-1 West Brom
W4 D3 L3

Barnsley stretched their impressive unbeaten home record against the Baggies and have now gone 18 Oakwell matches against them without defeat (W9 D9), a run stretching back to January 1947.

Home and away Barnsley are unbeaten in five meetings with West Brom (D3 L2) since losing at the Hawthorns in September 2007.

Each of the last three meetings have now ended in draws - the third time Barnsley and West Brom have drawn three successive meetings.

It is however the first time both league meetings in a season have ended level since 1993-1994 when both finished 1-1.

This was the fourth time the two teams have met on Boxing Day and the first time Barnsley have managed to avoid defeat, (lost 5-3 in 1905, 3-1 in 1907 and 5-0 in 1930)

Barnsley are undefeated in their past four Boxing Day matches, last tasting defeat in 2014, 1-0 at Preston. Filip Krovinovic is the first opposition player to score against the Reds on Boxing Day since Paul Gallagher five years ago.

West Brom have now won just one of their last 13 away league matches on Boxing Day (W1 D4 L8), a 2-1 win in 2012 against QPR.

West Brom's goal came after just five minutes, only Sheffield Wednesday (2) and Luton (2&4) have scored earlier against the Reds this season.

Barnsley recovered points when behind at half time for only the third time this season (also drawing v Derby and Bristol City) All three games have seen a last minute equaliser for Barnsley. - They have been behind at half time on eight occasions in 2019-2020.

It is the first time West Brom have been leading at half time at Oakwell since August 2000, although in that game the Reds came back to win 4-1.

There were 17,049 in attendance, the highest Oakwell crowd for a non Yorkshire opponent since Sunderland were the visitors in March (18,282)

Remarkably it is the highest Oakwell attendance on Boxing Day since 1957 when 20,307 packed in to see the Reds draw 1-1 with Notts County. This was the day after 11,343 had attended Meadow Lane to see the Reds win 3-2 on Christmas Day.

This was the 11th league game this season in which Barnsley had the majority of the ball possession (54%) and not won the game.

The four teams who occupied the bottom four positions in the Championship yesterday all saw 90+minute goals - 21st Luton conceded on 90+4 to draw 3-3, obviously 22nd Barnsley scored on 90, 23rd Wigan conceded on 90+3 to draw 1-1 whilst 24th Stoke scored twice on 90+3 and 90+7 to win 3-2 to move out of the relegation zone.

West Brom manager Slaven Billic said:
"Of course I am disappointed when you concede late and not get the three points but they did create a lot of chances in the second half.

"We knew it was going to be hard because they've recently got a really good record and are playing good football, especially at home.

"Barnsley are a good team. They run a lot and they came into our box with four, five or six players. But I expected us to be more clinical.

"It is a sticky period, I'm never happy with a point but we have to take it. When we conceded, we were disappointed but, to be fair, they deserved it."
