Barnsley 2-0 Leyton Orient

Last updated : 21 December 2014 By Rob Miles (BarnsleyBoy)

Barnsley won in the league for the first time in five matches.

They also finally secured their first home league clean sheet of the season, at the 11th attempt. It is the longest The Reds have gone from the start of the season without a league shut out at Oakwell since 1935-36 when it also took until their 11th match.

Coupled with the 3-0 FA Cup win at Chester in midweek, Barnsley have won back to back matches for only the second time this season and only the third time in 2014.

They have also now kept back-to-back clean sheets for only the second time this season.

Barnsley have now opened the scoring in five of their past six games in all competitions and each of their last four in the league, but this was only the second time they have gone on to win.

Barnsley have also scored in 15 of their last 16 games in all competitions and in each of their last 12 league games, their best run in the league since they scored in 17 successive league games between 22nd December 2012 and 1st April 2013.

Barnsley led at half time and went on to win for only the fifth time this season, they led by two goals at the break in the league for the first time since the 4-1 win over Gillingham back on the 23rd August. These two occasions are they only time they have managed it this season.

Top scorer Conor Hourihane ended his six game drought by bagging his 11th goal of the season.

Ross Turnbull was shown a red card for the third time in his career and  for the second time as a Barnsley player. He was also sent off in a 4-2 win over Huddersfield back in 2005.

Turnbull is the first Barnsley goalkeeper to be sent off since Ben Alnwick in the 4-3 League Cup win at Rochdale in August 2012. He is the first Reds stopper to be sent off in the league since Luke Steele in a 6-1 defeat at Newcastle in March 2010.

The former Chelsea keeper who is the third Barnsley player to be sent off this season was also booked in the win at Sheffield United last month making him the first Barnsley keeper to be given both a yellow and red card since Nick Colgan in 2006-2007.

Barnsley will sit in 14th position in the third tier of English football on Christmas Day, their lowest position on the festive day since 2002.
