Barnsley 2-1 Leyton Orient

Last updated : 12 February 2024 By Rob Miles

A stunning dramatic late comeback saw Barnsley win a game they had trailed 1-0 for the fourth time in League One this season.

Three of those victories have seen the Reds score winners in the final ten minutes however none as dramatic as this weekend where an Adam Phillips double arrived after 88 and 90+5 minutes!

Prior to this season Barnsley had gone 97 league games without managing to win after conceding the first goal, this is the first season they have achieved the feat on as many as four occasions since 2020-2021 when it also happened on four occasions.

Phillips sensational winner is Barnsley’s latest winning goal since December 2016 when Ryan Williams also scored after 90+5 in a 4-3 victory at Cardiff in the Championship.

It is the seventh goal that Barnsley have scored after the 90th minute in all competitions this season.

This was the 13th different game Phillips has scored in for Barnsley since joining the club, and they have won 12 of those games, drawing the other.

It is the first time Phillips has bagged a brace for the club and is the third Red to score twice in a league game this season after Devante Cole and John McAtee.

Luca Connell was sent off prior to Leyton Orient restarting the game following the equaliser, with his red card the second time this season Barnsley have suffered a late red against Orient – Sam Cosgrove was dimissed after 90+1 in the reverse fixture back in October.

Barnsley have won three of their last five League One matches in which they have finished with ten men (W3 D1 L1)

Barnsley conceded the opening goal at Oakwell for the fourth time in the last six home outings. Orient are the eighth side to come to Oakwell in League One this season and score the first goal from 16 games overall (50%), the most times it has occurred at this level since 2015-2016 (11)

This was the first time Leyton Orient have lost a game in which they have gone 1-0 up since May 2021 against Carlisle (2-3)

Barnsley have now reached the 30 game mark of the season and have accrued 56 points, the most at this stage of a campaign since…… last season! Compared to 2022-2023 they have won one less and drawn three more matches this season, they have though scored 10 more goals this season (55-45) but have conceded 7 more (27-34)

The winner was set up by a Corey O’Keeffe free kick – his fifth assist of the season, the joint most for the club in 2023-2024 along with Herbie Kane.

All four cards shown to Barnsley players came from the 80th minute onwards, they have now picked up 25 cards in this time period this season in all competitions from a total of 77 cards (32%)

Despite recent indifferent home form Phillips winner was Barnsley’s 30th home league goal of the season, only Blackpool (34) and Peterborough (33) have scored more League One goals in front of their own fans this season.

Overall it was Barnsley’s 55th league goal of the season, only Peterborough (59) have scored more.

Barnsley are now unbeaten in their last six meetings with Leyton Orient (W4 D2) however these span 43 years.

Prior to this run the Reds had failed to win in seven meetings (D2 L5)

This was the first meeting at Oakwell for ten years and Barnsley have won eight of the last nine Oakwell meetings and 20 from 27 here overall.

This was only the second time in six visits Orient have scored with the last occasion being their only victory in the last nine visits – 3-1 back in 1959.

Barnsley had 23 shots in this game – there were only 24 in total from both sides last time out against Bolton.

It’s the most shots Barnsley have had in a league game since the 28th October against Fleetwood (25)

Their 11 on target is the first time they have reached double figures in the league this season and their most since October 2020 against QPR (also 11)

Barnsley won nine corners, only against Peterborough (10) in August have they won more this season.
