Barnsley 3-0 Walsall

Last updated : 08 March 2015 By Rob Miles (BarnsleyBoy)

Lee Johnson’s side created a bit of history yesterday in becoming only the SECOND ever Barnsley team to win five matches in a row with five clean sheets. The only other time this has occurred was under Tim Ward in the 1954-1955 Third Division North season. Back then they managed an incredible EIGHT wins in a row with clean sheets in a run where they eventually won 10 games in succession. They finished that season as champions.

The Reds did win six in a row in 2013 but only four of those were in the league. This is the first time they have won five league games on the bounce since the first five of the 1996-1997 season. Another campaign that ended with promotion.

Adam Davies is the first Barnsley goalkeeper to keep five clean sheets in a row for 31 years. 1984 was the last time they managed this feat with scorelines of 1-0, 0-0, 1-0, 0-0, 1-0 against Leeds, Brighton, Charlton, Middlesbrough and Sheffield United.

Davies has made 16 appearances this season, and kept eight clean sheets.

In total Barnsley have kept 11 league clean sheets so far this season, already surpassing last seasons tally and equalling the total for the 2012-2013 season.

George Waring scored Barnsley’s first first half goal for six matches and it was only their fourth in their past 15 matches.

Waring becomes the third Barnsley player to score in three successive games this season.

Sam Winnall and Conor Hourihane have also managed that feat with Winnall netting in four straight matches.

Barnsley have gone 18 games without a draw, the longest run since they went 25 without a stalemate between 1st October 2011 and 3rd March 2012.

They have only had five stalemates all season, the joint lowest in the division.

Lee Johnson is the first Barnsley manager to win his first three matches in charge since Allan Clarke in 1978. He won his first five.

Barnsley have now won seven of their last eight league matches at Oakwell and have kept clean sheets in six of those eight games.

Barnsley have also now opened the scoring in each of their last 11 home games for the first time since the Premier League season of 1997-1998 when they managed it 13 times in a row. It started with Andy Liddell opening the scoring in a 3-2 defeat to Leeds in November 1997 and ended with a Neil Redfearn effort in a 1-1 draw with Tottenham in April 1998

They have now netted in each of their last 14 home league games, their best run since 2011 when they managed to net in 17 games in a row at Oakwell.

Sam Winnall’s 89th minute goal yesterday saw Barnsley move into second place in the division’s home scorers. It was Barnsley’s 33rd home league goal of the season, only MK Dons (40) have scored more in front of their own supporters.

The win was Barnsley’s tenth at home this season, double what they managed last season and their best tally since the 2010-2011 campaign when they won 11.
