Barnsley 3-1 Huddersfield Town

Last Updated : 05-Sep-2025 by Robert Miles

Barnsley’s promising start to the season continued as they made it four wins from their opening six league games – their best start to a campaign for seven seasons when they also won four of the first six League One games in 2018-2019.

It is only the second time it has occurred in the last 22 years with the prior occasion to 2018 being in 2003 however this season is the first time in that time that four wins and six have also been accompanied with a defeat.

Davis Keillor-Dunn opened the scoring after just nine minutes, the first time he has scored the opening goal in a game since the 29th March at Wigan when he scored a minute earlier than yesterday.

He went on to grab a brace, his 23rd goal in just 52 appearances for the club and the third time he has grabbed a brace for the club but the first time at Oakwell.

Of the 20 different matches DKD has netted for Barnsley they have now gone on to win 14 (70%)

His opener is the earliest Barnsley have scored in a match since the aforementioned Wigan game at the end of March and he has now scored after seven, eight and nine minutes for Barnsley with the only player to have scored before the tenth minute for the Reds since the start of last season being Adam Phillips from the penalty spot after four minutes against Stockport last September.

Captain Luca Connell was also on the scoresheet, incredibly the first time Irishman has netted in 43 appearances, last finding the net in a 2-1 win at Burton on the 21st September 2024. He only netted twice last season.

Barnsley were aided by the first half red card for Huddersfield goalkeeper Owen Goodman, the first opposition keeper to be sent off against Barnsley for 12 years, the last being Blackpool’s Matt Gilks in February 2013.

In that time only one Barnsley goalkeeper has been shown a red and that was Ross Turnbull against Leyton Orient back in December 2014.

Barnsley held a 2-0 half time lead for the first time in seven home games, last occurring against Bolton in April when they went on to win 4-1 and was their final home victory of 2024-2025.

That Bolton win was one of only six from 23 home league last season, they have won two of their opening three in 2025-2026.

That was also the last time Barnsley had been 3-0 up in a match prior to yesterday.

Three of Barnsley’s four league victories so far this season have seen them net three goals with their goals for tally of 11 the joint best in the division so far this season along with Cardiff, Huddersfield and Mansfield.

Barnsley are unbeaten in their opening three home league games of a season for the first time since 2018-2019 when they went throughout the entire league season at home without losing with that campaign also the last time they started a home season unbeaten in five in all competitions.

This win ended a run of five successive defeats against Huddersfield in all competitions.

It is a first league victory in four meetings.

Each of the last four meetings (all comps) had seen Huddersfield net twice with this the first clash in 13 that one side has scored more than two (since Huddersfield’s 5-0 win March 2014)

It is the first time Barnsley have netted three times against the Terriers since the second leg of the League One Play-Offs in May 2006 (a 3-1 win at Huddersfield) whilst it is the first time at Oakwell since a 4-2 win in January 2005.

This was Barnsley’s 30th win against Huddersfield from 83 meetings (36%)

The Reds have however now only lost one of the last seven Oakwell clashes (W4 D2)

Joe Taylor’s goal for Huddersfield just three minutes before the end of the 90 means Huddersfield have scored in each of their last 16 visits to Oakwell with the Reds last home clean sheet against the Terriers coming 29 years ago in a 3-0 victory in March 1996.

This was Barnsley’s fourth 3-1 win over Huddersfield with the only three coming in May 2006, August 1996 and March 2001.

Huddersfield scored with their only shot on target, the first time an opponent has done this since Bolton in April.
