Barnsley 3-1 Milton Keynes Dons

Last updated : 21 November 2022 By Rob Miles

Barnsley have now won four games in a row in all competitions for the second time this season and both have come within the last 13 matches.

They have won three successive league matches also for the second time this season.

It is the first time they have won four successive matches in all competitions twice in the same season since 2015-2016 when they won four in a row in League One in January 2016 and then won their final four matches of the season, including three play-off games.

It is the first time they have won three successive league games twice in the same season since 2020-2021 when they won three in a row in December 2020 then six in a row between February and March 2021.

Jordan Williams opened the scoring with his second league goal for the club (both have come in home matches on which Barnsley have gone on to score three times) – he then went on to assist the third for Herbie Kane which means he has now been involved in seven goals for the Reds this season (scored 2 assisted 5) and has two more assists than the next best for the Reds this season.

Adam Phillips made it 2-0, becoming the second Barnsley player to score in three successive matches this season along with Josh Benson.

Both Phillips and Kane scored and assisted in this game, the first time two players have done this in the same game since the 17th February 2021 when Carlton Morris and Alex Mowatt assisted each other in a 2-1 win over Blackburn.`

Barnsley have played 18 league games so far in 2022-2023 and this was only the fifth in which both teams have scored and first time in eight.

It is only the second time this season that both teams have scored in the first half of a Barnsley game and also a game has been 1-1 at half time – the away game at Ipswich in August the only other time for both situations.

It is the first time a Barnsley league game has been 1-1 at half time and the Reds have gone on to win since the 3rd November 2021 against Derby.

This was the fifth time Barnsley have scored at least three times in a game this season (all competitions) the most in a season since 2018-2019 when they did so on 14 occasions.

Three of those occasions this season have come at Oakwell, the first time they have scored at least three times on three occasions at Oakwell since 2018-2019 (4 occasions)

Kane’s clincher was his first goal for the club and first for any team since scoring for Hull against Middlesbrough in the Championship in July 2020.

This win saw Barnsley hit the 30 point mark – the exact amount of points they won in the whole of 2021-2022.

18 games is the quickest they have reached this mark since 2018-2019 when they hit 30 points after 16 games.

Both Liam Kitching and Mads Andersen were yellow carded, the first time two Barnsley centre halves were booked in the same league game since Andersen and Michal Helik were both booked at Nottingham Forest in January.

However it is the second time both Kitching and Andersen have been booked this season (also the FA Cup tie with Bolton)

Barnsley have now conceded a goal in 10 of their 18 league games, six of which have occurred at Oakwell.

Barnsley’s defensive total of 15 goals conceded is the joint best record in the division along with Bolton.

This was Barnsley’s ninth league victory of the season and only the second not to be accompanied with a clean sheet – a 3-1 victory over Charlton the other exception.

This was the first league meeting between the teams in seven years with this result a first league victory over the Dons since 2006 and only a second overall since they broke away from Wimbledon.

In all competitions there have now been three Barnsley wins, three MK Dons wins and three draws.

Barnsley have scored three times in three of the last four meetings.

Barnsley had a total of 20 shots on goal, their most in a league game since April 2021 at Huddersfield (21)

MK Dons had only two, the lowest by a Barnsley opponent since Bristol City had only one in February 2021.

Despite this the Dons are the first opponents in six league outings to have more than one shot on target against the Reds.

Barnsley have seen 10 shots on target against them in their last nine league outings, and conceded six goals from them.

MK Dons manager Liam Manning said:

“I think it's a frustrating one,”

“We didn't start the game well, conceded a poor goal which we'd set up against, but we responded well. We showed a togetherness and spirit to get back back into the game and come in at 1-1.

“But then the second half we just didn't get going. That's where we're at at the minute - we're lacking that consistency.”
