Barnsley 4-1 Derby County

Last updated : 26 February 2023 By Rob Miles

Another FOUR-midable performance saw the Reds net quadruple amount of goals for the second game running to leapfrog their opponents Derby County and move about sixth spot for the first time in 2023 (last occupying higher when they went fourth after a 2-1 win over Fleetwood on the 29th December 2022)

Following on from the 4-0 win at Cheltenham last weekend Barnsley have scored four times in successive league matches for the first time since April 1980 when they defeated Wimbledon 4-0 and Mansfield 4-1.

It is the first time Barnsley have scored four times at Oakwell in a league game since netting five against QPR on the 14th December 2019.

This was also the second successive game the Reds have netted three first half goals – the first time this has occurred since April 1968.

Devante Cole netted two of the goals, the first Red to score a brace in 2023 – Cole was also the last player to do this, v Burton on the 17th December 2022.

It’s the first brace from a Barnsley player in the first half of a game since the aforementioned QPR game in December 2019 when Conor Chaplin netted twice in 18 minutes and went on to score a hattrick.

Cole has now scored Barnsley’s opening goal on seven occasions this season (all comps) from eight games in which he has scored in.

Barnsley scored in both first half and second half stoppage time for the first time since 6th October 2018 at Peterborough.

Adam Phillips put Barnsley 2-0 up by scoring for the third successive game, the first Barnsley player to do this since Aaron Leya Iseka against Sheffield United, Bristol City and Derby in October/November 2021.

Only one of the four goals was directly assisted by a Barnsley player and that was Phillips goal by Jordan Williams, it is Williams’ sixth assist of the season, most by any Barnsley player in 2022-2023.

This was Barnsley’s fourth straight league win of the season, the first time they have been on two separate runs of at least four straight league wins in the same season since 1999-2000.

There were 17,145 in attendance, the highest Oakwell crowd since the 8th February 2020 against Sheffield Wednesday (17,789)

This was the third time Barnsley have scored four times in a game in 2022-2023 (all comps) the most in a season since 2018-2019 (eight)

This victory ended a run of three successive defeats against Derby.

However they are now unbeaten in the last four Oakwell meetings (W2 D2)

They have now won four of the last seven meetings in all competitions at Oakwell (W4 D2 L1)

They have lost three of the last seven overall with all three coming at Pride Park.

Derby manager Paul Warne said:

“I’m a little bit frustrated but Barnsley deserved the win.

"I don’t think there was much in the game. They smoked us in that first half and we never really recovered.

"It was just one of those days where it felt anything that could go wrong in our box did, and anything that could go right for us in their box, didn’t.”
